The next 5 years of IoT – what next? – Looking Ahead into the Future of IoT
By Patrice Duren / November 5, 2023 / No Comments / AWS Certification Exam, Case study of Amazon, Working with partners on IIoT
Data analysis is often done at scale to analyze large sets of data using the capabilities of cloud computing services such as AWS. Designing a workflow for the data analysis workflow to follow is the pivotal starting point for this to be performed. This will follow five main categories: collection, storage, processing, visualization, and data security.
In this section, we will be introducing you to data analysis on AWS, discussing which services we can use as part of AWS to perform the data analytics workloads we need it to, and talking through best practices that are part of this. We will understand how to design and incorporate workflows into the current IoT network that we currently have and work with it to better power our capabilities.
Common trends and challenges
There are five key main trends and challenges that are on the horizon for the future of IoT:
Increased adoption and integration: According to Ericsson’s IoT connections outlook report (https://www.ericsson.com/en/reports-and-papers/mobility-report/dataforecasts/iot-connections-outlook), the number of IoT connections between connected devices is expected to reach 34.7 billion by 2028, and this growth will come from both consumer and industrial IoT (IIoT) applications. We can expect to see greater integration between IoT devices and other technologies, such as AI, blockchain, and edge computing.
Focus on security and privacy: As the number of connected devices grows, so does the potential for security breaches and privacy violations. We can expect to see an increased focus on security and privacy, with companies investing more in secure design, encryption, and authentication protocols.
Standards and regulations: As IoT continues to grow, there will be a greater need for standards and regulations to ensure interoperability and security. We can expect to see continued efforts to establish standards and regulations, both at the national and international levels.
Edge computing: Edge computing, which involves processing data closer to where it is generated, is becoming increasingly important in the IoT space. We can expect to see greater adoption of edge computing in the coming years, as it enables faster processing, lower latency, and reduced data transmission costs.
Sustainability and energy efficiency: IoT has the potential to help address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including sustainability and energy efficiency. We can expect to see greater emphasis on IoT applications that promote sustainability and reduce energy consumption, such as smart buildings and cities, precision agriculture, and renewable energy monitoring.
With those key trends explored, we have gained some great insights into the main key trends that will be impacting IoT. Now, we can look at how the future of smart businesses will be with IoT.
The future of smart businesses with IoT
Businesses will certainly progress quickly with IoT. This section will discuss key areas where businesses are expected to progress with IoT and take you through a case study with Amazon as to how this future is unfolding.
