As IoT continues to evolve and expand, it is important to follow best practices for the dos and don’ts of IoT to ensure the security, privacy, and functionality of IoT systems. IoT holds the capability to radically transform various industries and alter our day-to-day lives, work, and interactions with our surroundings. However, as with any new technology, there are risks and challenges associated with IoT that must be addressed to maximize its benefits and minimize its negative impact. In this section, we will discuss some best practices for the dos and don’ts of IoT toward the future of IoT, including guidelines for security, privacy, testing, and standards compliance. By following these best practices, we can ensure the safe and effective deployment of IoT systems and unlock the full potential of this transformative technology.
Dos
The following are some dos as part of the best practices we need to consider with IoT:
Secure IoT devices: Security is one of the most important aspects of IoT, and it is important to ensure that all IoT devices are secured against potential threats. This can include implementing strong passwords, keeping software up to date, and using encryption.
Protect privacy: IoT devices often collect and transmit personal data, so it is important to protect users’ privacy by implementing privacy policies, obtaining consent for data collection and use, and providing transparency around how data is being used.
Test thoroughly: IoT devices and systems should be tested thoroughly to identify potential issues and vulnerabilities before deployment. This can include testing for interoperability, scalability, and security.
Follow industry standards: There are a number of industry standards and best practices for IoT that can be followed to ensure the security and functionality of IoT systems. Now, we can take a look at some of the don’ts we need to consider with IoT:

Collect unnecessary data: Collecting unnecessary data may not only pose a risk to privacy but can also increase the risk of data breaches and make systems more vulnerable to attack.
Assume interoperability: Not all IoT devices and systems are interoperable, and assuming interoperability can lead to compatibility issues and vulnerabilities.
Ignore end-of-life (EOL) considerations: IoT devices often have a limited lifespan, and ignoring EOL considerations can lead to issues with disposal and recycling. It is important to design IoT devices with EOL considerations in mind, such as using recyclable materials and designing devices that can be easily disassembled and recycled.
